Mini-Update Prior to the First Night Practice

Just a few hours before the Buffalo Bills allow us on to the campus of St. John Fisher college, I wanted to fill you all in on the recent goings on and some thoughts about the team:

– The wait is over, we now know that Trent Edwards will start camp as the first team quarterback. Currently Brohm and Fitzpatrick are splitting time with the second and third team and Brown is getting a few reps here and there.

– Aaron Maybin has been demoted already from his starting position at outside linebacker in favor of Reggie Torbor. Maybin reportedly looked terrible yesterday and this morning got in a fight with some of the offensive players, pushing runningback Fred Jackson from behind and getting into it with linemen Eric Wood and Geoff Hangartner.

– Marcus Easley and Steve Johnson reportedly had awful hands yesterday, Easley dropping a good %80 of his targets. Johnson, on a plus note, looks to be running very crisp, clean routes.

– Jamon Meredith was lining up as the first-team left tackle, then switching to right tackle with the second team to give way to Bell or Wang. I’ve been told he’s looked very impressive and, along with Wood and Levitre, seemed very confident and aware out there.

– DE Marcus Stroud is in the best shape of his life, as he’s been saying all offseason, and looks very motivated. From reports I’ve seen, he’s done nothing but impress while on the field.

– UDFA HB Joique Bell (Wayne State) got his chances with the first and second team offense, as I had assumed, in Spiller’s absence – he’s been impressive and has garnered some cheers from fans attending practices.

– Lynch looks much ‘thicker’ now and seems poised to be the power / change of pace back for the offense in 2010. ESPN’s Tim Graham has said that he believes that, if he stays on current pace, Lynch will be the starting tailback week one for the Bills. Spiller needs to sign ASAP to re-gain any ground he may have lost in this competition.

– There was a lot of speculation about the possibility of shipping a defensive back to Baltimore in exchange for OT Jared Gaither after Ravens CB Dominique Foxworth tore his ACL and landed on injured reserve this morning. Speculation was halted when Gaither went down with an unspecified injury shortly after and had to be carted off the field.

That’s all for now – I’ll be at practice tonight gathering looks and information to bring back here. Keep checking all week as I’ll be making a few trips. For anyone going, feel free to contact me through here or Twitter if you’d like to meet up. Enjoy yourselves, and check back later for updates.
